The Upasaka Dharmatala is one of the two "arhats" added to Chinese buddhist iconography. He is always shown with a knapsack full of Buddhist texts and in this capacity is said to represent the 8th century Chinese pilgram Hsuan Tsang who was sponsored by the emporer of China to travel to India and returned with a library of Buddhist texts.
